FACILITIES for CYCLISTS

PUFFIN EXPRESS

Like cycling but find some of the bits getting to the main destination tedious? Pressed for time? Puffin Express can help you get to Orkney and Lewis, or speed you back to Inverness after doing an end-to-ender. Cyclists may find 2 of our tours particularly useful:
  • Our John o'Groats tour as a way of getting to Orkney; or getting to JoG if you're starting from there;
  • End-to-enders: the same John o'Groats tour as a way of getting yourself and bike back to Inverness;
  • Our Lewis tour is a good way of getting your bike to Ullapool and thence to the Outer Hebrides.

  • Two of our vehicles are equipped for carrying bicycles; below (left), a Sprinter equipped with a Witter carrier; below right, close up of the carrier:

    We supply blankets etc to prevent chafing between bikes; elastic securing links; chain and padlock.
    Our carriers take 2 bikes comfortably - 3 also possible.

    END-TO-ENDERS
    If you've just cycled from Land's End to JoG and don't have a support crew, then Puffin Express can get you and your bike(s) back to Inverness. Leaving John o'Groats about 1600-1700hrs, we have you back in Inverness by 2000hrs.
    Fares: On many of our JoG trips in the summer we have people going on to Orkney; consequently we sometimes have empty seats on the way back to Inverness. In this case the fare for transport to Inverness with bike and drop-off at a location within the city is £ 15. If we have no-one going on to Orkney and the trip is sold out then the full fare of £ 28 applies. In any event, £ 15 secures your place and, if we've no-one going on to Orkney and the trip is full, the balance of £ 13 can be paid at the time.
    Click here or here for dates this service is available.
    In principle it is also possible to do this from our Castle of Mey tour.

    If you want to ride up with us from Inverness to JoG, then see below - Orkney.

    ORKNEY
    Ride up with Puffin Express on any of our John o'Groats tours from late March to mid-October. Get an interesting commentary on the route and advice on how best to spend your time in Orkney. Late afternoon, board John o'Groats Ferries (May-September) or Pentland Ferries (October-April) for the shortest crossing to the archipelago.
    The fare for this is normally the same as for our regular John o'Groats tour, namely, £ 28.
    Click here for details of our John o'Groats tour and here for a full calendar of all JoG trips.
    In principle it is also possible to do this from our Castle of Mey tour.

    OUTER HEBRIDES/LEWIS
    On Fridays from early July to early September we pick you and your bike up at any accommodation in Inverness about 0700 and have you in Ullapool in time to catch the first ferry to Lewis. Click here for dates this service is available.
    Fare: £ 12
