Return Strathpeffer c. 1730hrs; return Inverness c. 1830hrs
Fare: £ 20
We depart Inverness and cross the Black Isle before turning towards Dingwall, county town of Ross & Cromarty. A brief stop in Strathpeffer for passengers joining there before we continue west.
We cross the watershed and stop at Corrieshalloch Gorge, one of the most spectacular canyons in the Highlands. Time for a hot drink before we continue south to Dundonnell and follow the Atlantic Coast past Gruinard Island of sinister memory before coming to Poolewe. Here you need to decide which of our walks you wish to do. Both walks are marvellous in clear weather, giving views of ocean, moor, mountain, loch and forest. See Ordnance Survey Sheet 19 (Gairloch & Ullapool) for precise routes:
CIRCULAR WALK - from Poolewe back to Poolewe. 5-6 miles; little climbing. The first two miles of this hike run from Sròndubh (863814) south-east to Kernsary (893793), much of the route by the north shore of Loch Kernsary. This is a typical rough Highland footpath, and gives wonderful views of the wild Torridonian Sandstone mountains, contrasting with the green oasis of Kernsary itself. From Kernsary the route is on an easy track, running south-west by west for about a mile-and-a-half to 874786 (near Inveran) before turning north-west to Poolewe (858808). This last section is by the beautiful River Ewe.
As noted above, the first part of the hike is on a rough track. If you start the walk and decide it is not for you, this is not a problem; you can just turn back. However, even walking a half-mile or so will give you the benefit of the views.
A little beyond Poolewe we come in sight of Loch Maree, and it's from near here that our other walk starts.

THROUGH WALK. This starts from 858790, near Tollie Farm, and climbs a few hundred feet through narrow defiles. After two miles or so the view opens dramatically towards Loch Maree and the brooding mass of Slioch (980m) beyond. The last mile of the path is through woodland by the shore of Loch Maree. We normally meet walkers at the Forest Enterprise car park at Slattadale (888722), though if you're feeling energetic you can continue to the A 832 road or even Victoria Falls at 895711. Total distance 5-6 miles with about 700' of climbing. |
