WHISKY TRAIL

PUFFIN EXPRESS

The tour described below takes 5-6 hours and is, we believe, the best introduction to most aspects of the production of Scotch whisky. The tour as described is available weekdays (Monday-Friday) throughout the year, except a few major public holidays.

We leave Inverness and head east for Forres, then turning a little south to Dallas Dhu Distillery, a property in the care of Historic Scotland. This is a museum distillery, and has the advantage of showing the whole sequence of whisky making, including floor malting, which is practised now by very few distilleries.

We then proceed further into the hills, by wild moorland and mountain scenery, to one of the most famous distilleries of them all - Smith's Glenlivet, usually just known as The Glenlivet. Here you'll have a guided tour telling you about the production of the amber nectar.

After lunch at the pleasant cafeteria within the old distillery buildings, we proceed to the Speyside Cooperage. By law, all Scotch whisky must be matured for at least 3 years in wooden casks, and most is matured longer than this minimum period. Here we see all aspects of the cooper's ancient craft. This is a most engrossing visit.
(The cooperage does not work at weekends, hence this tour being available Monday-Friday only.)

The cost of this trip for up to 8 people is from £100-190 depending on the time of year. Admission fees and meal not included.
